Do children travel free on Barcelona public transport?
Yes — until their fourth birthday. After that a child pays exactly what an adult pays, which surprises most families and is the single biggest hidden cost of getting around Barcelona.
Short answer: Children under 4 travel free on Barcelona metro, buses and trams and need no ticket at all — TMB's terms state that "children under four are exempt from having a transport ticket". From age 4 there is no child fare. A four-year-old pays the same as an adult on every standard TMB ticket, and the Hola Barcelona tourist travel card has no child rate either. The two ways round it are T-familiar (€11.50 for 8 journeys that a group can share) and city cards that do have a reduced child price, such as the Barcelona Card Family.

T-familiar and T-casual cannot be used on metro line L9 Sud to or from Airport T1 and T2. You need a separate airport ticket for those journeys, for every member of the family aged 4 and over.
Valid to the airport
Hola Barcelona and the Barcelona Card Family both include the airport metro connection. If you are landing and departing by metro, that is two expensive journeys each that you do not have to buy.
